Book Review: Coffee Dates From Hell by Jim Tillberry

November 18, 2014 By Sam Sly 2 Comments

Laughter is a great workout for some of your deep core muscles and also for your spirit. Since I believe that daily laughter is an essential part of “feeling fit”, I occasionally share or review humorous books or entertainment. Coffee Dates From Hell by Jim Tillberry is one of those books that can help exercise your deep core muscles.

Disclosure: This is sort of a sponsored review, I received a review copy of Coffee Dates From Hell by Jim Tillberry. I also include my Amazon affiliate links in the purchasing information (Amazon). The opinions expressed are my own and do not represent Mr. Tilberry.

Summary Information Coffee Dates From Hell:

Genre: Humor
Length: 148 pages (paperback version)
ISBN: 978-1500894368

Summary from the Author or Publisher:

“When two single people meet for the first time, they often arrange a “coffee date.” Coffee Dates From Hell is a humorous fictional account of several very bad coffee dates. Many of these dates are disasters from the beginning. Others are destined to be train wrecks if the two people ever see each other again. The coffee dates include several famous people such as Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein, and J. Edgar Hoover. You’ll also meet a range of colorful characters including a psychic, a cross dresser, and even a cannibal. The coffee dates include many funny twists and surprises. The humor is often silly, irreverent, and politically incorrect.”

My Experience Reading: Coffee Dates From Hell

I would describe Coffee Dates From Hell by Jim Tillberry as humorous light reading.  I managed to read the entire book during a couple relaxing baths.  According to Tillberry, many manage to read the entire book in a single evening.

Coffee Dates From Hell is comprised of 21 short fictional anecdotes about coffee dates from “hell” and coffee shops from hell. Given the variety, I found some more amusing than others. Some made me laugh out loud and some inspired a small chuckle.  I tend to be a little sensitive and did feel that some of the stories might be a little offensive to some people. Overall, the book features a lightly irreverent humor. The chapters are illustrated in a distinctive style. For an example, see the collage at the top of this page or the following example:

An illustration of a coffee date between Albert Einstein and Barbara. This is an example of the book’s illustration style.

As someone who previously has been on more coffee dates than I care to admit, I found moments of painful awkwardness as a reader. Fortunately, I didn’t have many dates from hell, but  I love that Tillberry pokes fun at one of the more awkward parts of the modern mating ritual.

On the surface, meeting a date for coffee seems the perfect safe get-to-know-you date. After all, I love to meet my friends for coffee and I love coffee. In practice a coffee date can feel a little more like a job interview than a social interaction.  Tillberry did a masterful job at expressing the ridiculousness that occasionally ensues.

Just for the record, I don’t want to discourage my single readers from going on coffee dates (and I don’t believe Tillberry does either).  At worst a bad coffee date is just a couple hours of your life and possibly your own amusing anecdote. At best, it is an opportunity to get to know someone who may turn out to be special to you. If ever you do find yourself cringing at your latest coffee date from hell, be sure and get this book. Commiseration is the first step to recovery!

As you may have guessed, I recommend Coffee Dates From Hell by Jim Tillberry to all the single ladies (and the single gents).  I also recommend it to those who are no longer single.  If you ever feel nostalgic for your single days or find yourself living vicariously through your single friends–please reach for this book!

Excellent read, I just passed this onto a friend who was doing some research on that. And he actually bought me lunch as I found it for him smile So let me rephrase that: Thank you for lunch!
