Molkky (mölkky) is fun outdoor game to play with family or friends! People of different ages and fitness levels can play together. Molkky is designed for two or more players ages 6 and up.
For those who do not know, Molkky is relatively new to the USA. It is based on an old Scandinavian “throwing game” called Kyykkä. As I have Finnish ancestors, I am quite curious about Molkky. Luckily, Tactic Games sent me a Molkky game to review and introduce to you.
I love that Molkky is lightly active, low tech, outdoor game. I also love that it can be casual or more serious (there are international Molkky competitions!). And a range of ages can enjoy Molkky together. Molkky fits very well with the “Feeling Fit” lifestyle.
Video Demonstration of How To Play Molkky:
Before I share my experiences with Molkky, I thought I would show you a video created by Tactic Games. It basically demonstrates how to play Molkky…
What Is Included In A Molkky Game:
As the above image illustrates, the Molkky game includes:
- 12 numbered pins, the pins have a pointy top and are a sturdy wood. Do be careful of small spinters though!
- 1 larger wooden skittle. This skittle is surprisingly heavy, though light enough for most people 6 and over.
- 1 sturdy wooden carrying box with short rope handles
- A colorful score record book.
To me, the set seems rugged and sturdy. As a former farm girl, I kind of like that. A Molkky set will last a long time quite possibly a lifetime.
My Experience and Impressions Of Molkky:
Okay, I am a rebel. In the above picture I didn’t set the pins up in the correct way. Sorry, that is just how I roll. But I do actually recommend setting it up correctly for a good competition.
Molkky is a little like lawn bowling, bowling or horseshoes and Bocce. I like how portable it is as I can take it to a park, the beach, a friend’s house, just about anywhere. I love how versatile Molkky is. You can set the pins up in a variety of settings and vary the game if you wish.
Tactic Games also sells mini-Molkky which can be played inside (what a great rainy day active game if you have the space!). The also have Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle and Minions themed Molkky games. So there are a few options if the classic Molkky doesn’t suit your preferences.
The game itself is simple enough for a 6 year old to learn. However, it may take me a few games to develop some mad Molkky skills. I like activities like this that are simple to start, but can be more challenging depending on the variation you play and who you compete against.
The only think I didn’t like was that the wood seemed a little unfinished and I get tiny splinters on my hands when handling Molkky. Perhaps this adds to the rustic charm, but I would prefer that the pins and skittle were sanded. Of course, this issue is easily fixed with a light sander or sand paper.
I recommend Molkky if you want a durable, portable outdoor game. Molkky is fun all year (remember it is originally a Nordic game!). And if you really want an indoor game, than mini Molkky is an option!
About Molkky:
Molkky is a sturdy and durable outdoor game in which success is based on a combination of chance and throwing accuracy.
All you need is an outdoor space – a backyard, park or field – and a few friends, and a set of Mölkky pins.
How To Play Molkky:
Molkky is easy to play.
- Just arrange the pins, number 1 through 12, in a formation
- Then throw the Molkky skittle pin to try to knock down some pins.
- To win the game, players try to knock down a total of 50 points worth of pins. More competitive rounds can be played by trying to score exactly 50 points. If players go over 50, then they go back to 25 points and try again to reach 50 exactly. The first player or team to 50 exactly wins.
According to Tactic Games:
Mölkky is an updated version of an old Scandinavian “throwing game” called Kyykkä that has been around for hundreds of years. Without age or fitness restrictions, and suitable to most outdoor spaces.
Molkky is an easy, go-to game on any day. All over the world, Mölkky is enjoyed for its casual, easy game play, as well as in serious, top tournaments and championship competitions.
Some of the most decorated and celebrated Mölkky competitions have been held since 1997 in Finland. An annual Australian Mölkky Championship has been held since 2010 and several Mölkky association have been founded, including Finnish International Mölkky Association, Slovak Mölkky Association, French Mölkky Association, Japan Mölkky Association, Czech Molkky Association, and Sweden Molkky Association. The history of Mölkky is available on Wikipedia.
