Summer is coming! During the Summer I like to swim or take water aerobics classes at the local outdoor pool. My hair, on the other hand does not enjoy it as much!
Last Summer, my hair became dry, brittle and bleached by the sun and chlorine. I polled my swimmer friends for their favorite tips and learned a few helpful and effective tips.
One common tip is to find a good swim cap. Sadly this can be a challenge to find a swim cap for long hair. I recently had the opportunity to try a swim cap that is just perfect for longer or thicker hair! You are also fortunate as one lucky ready will win a free cap from Swim On! See giveaway entry widget following the five tips…
Five Tips to Protect Long Hair From Chlorine In The Pool:
1. Pre-condition Your Hair
If I plan to get my hair wet, I precondition with coconut oil or olive oil. I have read on Beauty Brains that a conditioner containing silicone can help prevent your hair from absorbing chlorine. I know some prefer not to use silicone on their hair so I mention that a rich oil can help if applied thickly (though you will need to shampoo afterwards!).
last summer, I found a conditioner that worked well as a pre-conditioning treatment (if you don’t mind washing your hair after swimming). You do still need a good swim cap that can accommodate your hair. But pool time becomes deep conditioning treatment time. Seeing the Beauty Brains post I realize this worked so well because it contains silicone as well as natural oils – Review Argan Oil Hair Mask From Instanatural
2. Thoroughly Wet Your Hair (If You Don’t Mind)
If you don’t mind, thoroughly soaking your hair before entering the swimming pool can prevent your hair from absorbing too much chlorine.
3. Try a Chlorine Removing Shampoo or a DIY Alternative
DIY alternatives include a Vitamin C rinse treatment. Apparently vitamin C can help neutralize chlorine. Some swimmers have success mixing club soda with citrus or with a vitamin C crystals and using that as a rinse after swimming. (I heard that Trader Joes is a good place to purchase vitamin C crystals).
4. Minimize Blow Drying and Heat Styling
Chlorine, washing and drying hair all serve as a triple threat to make your hair dry and brittle. When I go swimming, I frequently wash and blow dry my hair twice in the same day. I find I can minimize the heat exposure if I use an absorbent microfiber towel to blot some of the water from my hair. Then the drying is just to finish the job. Using a cooler setting can help as well.
5. Wear a Swim Cap Designed for Long Hair
Sometimes you may be able to keep your hair dry by using a swim cap. I find this works well for aqua aerobics and sometimes for recreational swimming. When I take swim lessons and lap swim, I rarely manage to keep all my hair dry despite wearing a swim cap. However, your miles may vary.
I just discovered a great swim cap that is my new favorite. I typically have issues putting on a regular swim cap and removing it without pulling hair out. The Swim On cap for long or thick hair is a lot kinder.
This cap doubles as an excellent shower cap! Even if you don’t swim, I think it is well worth purchasing for that purpose. It doesn’t leave the ugly ridges on my forehead that normal bath caps form so it is nice for keeping my hair dry during a quick shower before a night out.
